How Die Casting Works — Process Overview

Die casting forces molten metal under high pressure into a reusable steel die cavity. The process produces near-net-shape parts with tight dimensional tolerances and smooth surface finish — reducing or eliminating secondary machining. A typical production cycle runs 30–90 seconds per shot depending on part complexity and alloy.

Step 01
Die Design & DFM
H13 or P20 steel die designed in SolidWorks. Mold-flow simulation verifies fill pattern, gate location, and cooling channels before first tool cut.
Step 02
Alloy Melting
Aluminum (A380, ADC12) or zinc (Zamak 3/5) ingots melted in electric furnace. Temperature controlled within ±5°C. XRF composition check per heat lot.
Step 03
High-Pressure Injection
Molten metal injected into die at 1,000–20,000 PSI (HPDC) or 7–30 PSI (LPDC). Fill time under 100 milliseconds for thin-wall aluminum parts.
Step 04
Cooling & Ejection
Part solidifies in die under controlled cooling. Ejector pins release the casting. Flash and overflow trimmed at the press.
Step 05
Post-Cast CNC & Finishing
Critical features machined to ±0.005mm on DMG Mori 5-axis. Parting lines removed. Surface finishing: anodize, powder coat, bead blast, or electroplate.
Step 06
CMM Inspection & Shipment
100% dimensional verification on Zeiss Contura CMM. FAI balloon report, XRF cert, and CoC included with every shipment. Air or sea freight from HCMC.
VNcontX difference: Steps 01–03 handled by our Verified Partner Network foundry. Steps 05–06 completed in our own facility — same roof, same quality team, same CMM equipment used on our CNC machining orders. Single purchase order covers everything.

Die Casting Vietnam — Frequently Asked Questions

Do you own die casting machines or work through partners?
VNcontX works through a Verified Partner Network of foundries in Ho Chi Minh City for the casting operation itself. All post-cast operations — CNC machining, EDM, finishing, and CMM inspection — are performed in our own facility. This is standard practice for contract manufacturers of our size; what matters to buyers is quality traceability and single-point accountability, which we provide on every order.
What alloys are available and how are they verified?
Standard alloys: A380, ADC12, A383, A360 (aluminum), Zamak 3/5 (zinc), AZ91D (magnesium). All supplied to ASTM B85/B86/B94 or JIS H5302. XRF spectrometer composition check is performed per heat lot. Results are retained with the lot traveler and included in the Certificate of Conformance shipped with every order.
What tolerances can you hold on die cast parts?
As-cast: NADCA Grade 2 ±0.10mm per 25mm linear dimension. Post-cast CNC machining on critical features: ±0.005mm standard, ±0.003mm precision. Draft angles minimum 1° exterior walls, 2° internal cores. Any zero-draft feature requires post-cast CNC — flagged at DFM review before tool cut. See our CNC machining page for full tolerance capabilities.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No hard MOQ. We run prototype quantities (1–50 pcs) through T1 sample stage and scale to production volumes on the same tooling. Tooling cost is a one-time investment; per-part cost drops significantly at higher volumes. Request a quote with your target annual volume and we’ll give you a tiered price breakdown.
How does the Section 301 tariff benefit apply?
Vietnam-origin die cast parts enter the US at 0% tariff under standard MFN rates. Chinese die castings currently face Section 301 duties of 25–145% depending on HTS code. On a $100,000 annual casting spend, that’s $25,000–$145,000 in avoidable import duties. We provide country-of-origin documentation with every shipment for US customs compliance.
What is the lead time for tooling and first samples?
T1 samples: 15–20 days from drawing approval including tooling build. FAI and CMM dimensional report shipped with T1 parts. Production tooling using H13/P20 hardened steel dies: 20–35 days. Expedited T1 available in some cases — discuss with our engineering team at duc.nguyen@vncontx.com.
