Why Prototype in Vietnam — Landed Cost vs. China vs. Domestic

Section 301 tariffs apply to Chinese-origin manufactured parts, tooling, and metal components entering the US. Vietnam sits outside the Section 301 schedule — 0% additional duty on CNC parts, injection molds, and sheet metal fabrications under current trade classification.

Factor Vietnam — VNcontX China US Domestic
Section 301 Tariff (US) 0% 25–145% N/A
EVFTA Tariff (EU) 0% qualifying goods Standard MFN rate N/A
Part Cost vs. China (pre-tariff) Comparable — 30–40% lower landed Baseline pre-tariff 2–4× higher
Air freight to US West Coast 2–3 days (Tan Son Nhat → LAX) 3–5 days Domestic ground
ISO 9001:2015 + CMM report Included every order Varies by supplier Varies by shop

Trade classifications and tariff rates are subject to change. VNcontX does not provide trade compliance advice — consult your customs broker for current HTS classification on specific part categories. Landed cost estimates based on typical air freight rates from Ho Chi Minh City.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a prototype part and a production part from VNcontX?
The part geometry, material, and tolerance class are identical — that is the point. A prototype part at VNcontX is made on the same DMG Mori 5-axis machines, from the same material stock, to the same drawing, as a production run. The difference is quantity and inspection intensity: prototypes get a full FAI with CMM dimensional report on every piece; production runs get in-process inspection with Cpk tracking. There is no separate “prototype grade” — what you validate is what you scale.
Can I run CNC, injection mold, and sheet metal prototypes simultaneously from one order?
Yes. VNcontX operates CNC machining, injection mold tooling, and sheet metal fabrication in-house at the Bình Chánh facility. One RFQ, one NDA, one point of contact. If your assembly requires a machined housing, a molded connector, and a fabricated bracket — all three can run in parallel. Submit a combined STEP package via the quote form or contact duc.nguyen@vncontx.com to coordinate a multi-process order.
What happens after prototype sign-off — how do I scale to production?
For CNC parts: the same CAM program and fixturing used for prototype runs production batches — no re-setup, no re-qualification. For injection molds: VNcontX prototype molds are built in P20 or semi-hardened H13 steel rated for 300,000+ shots, so the same tool runs your validation samples and your first production batch without a mold swap. For sheet metal: the same laser program and bend tooling scales directly. DFM data from prototype carries forward — you are not starting over. See our prototype mold page for tooling upgrade path details.
Does VNcontX sign an NDA before reviewing my files?
Yes. A mutual NDA is available before any file transfer. Submit your request via the Technical Briefing form and our engineer will send the NDA for counter-signature before we request your CAD files. If your program requires a specific NDA template from your side, we will review and sign that instead.
