Section 301 tariff update (2025): US importers sourcing from China now face 25–145% tariffs on manufactured goods. Vietnam is fully exempt. On a $200,000 production order, that difference is $50,000–$290,000 in landed cost.

Why Move Mass Production to Vietnam

The Section 301 tariff situation has made Vietnam the default answer for US manufacturers sourcing from Asia. But tariffs are only part of the calculation.

  • Section 301: 0% vs China’s 25–145% Tariff-Free
Vietnam is not subject to Section 301 tariffs. EVFTA also gives EU buyers preferential rates. The landed cost advantage is structural, not temporary.
  • 30–40% lower landed cost than equivalent Chinese suppliers
Labor cost advantage combined with tariff exemption delivers 30–40% reduction on total landed cost for most manufactured goods categories.
  • Cat Lai Port + Tan Son Nhat Airport within 25km
Air freight to LAX: 2–3 business days. Sea freight to US West Coast: 18–22 days. Faster lead time to market than South China sourcing for many product categories.
  • ISO 9001:2015 certified, Cpk ≥1.67 process control
Not all Vietnam factories meet Western quality standards. VNcontX runs 100% FAI on every order, CMM inspection (Zeiss Contura + Mitutoyo), and full dimensional reports before shipment.
  • Australia: strategic proximity, zero SEA manufacturer competition
Transit time HCMC to Sydney/Melbourne: 6–10 days sea, 2–4 days air. Australian manufacturers face almost no Vietnam-based competitor in the precision parts space.

Vietnam vs China Mass Production: What Buyers Need to Know in 2026

The tariff environment has shifted the calculation permanently. Here is the honest comparison.

Factor Vietnam (VNcontX) China (Typical)
Section 301 Tariff (US) 0% — fully exempt 25–145% depending on HS code
EVFTA (EU Tariff) Preferential / reduced Standard MFN rate
Standard Tolerance ±0.005mm (ISO verified) ±0.01–0.02mm (typical mid-tier)
Cpk Process Control ≥1.67, documented Varies — rarely documented
FAI + CMM Report 100% every order On request, extra cost
Air Freight to LA (days) 2–3 days 3–4 days
Sea Freight to US West Coast 18–22 days 14–18 days (closer ports)
Landed Cost Index (US import) Baseline +55% to +185% vs Vietnam

Sea freight advantage from China narrows significantly when Section 301 tariff cost is added back into total landed cost calculation. See full cost analysis: Vietnam vs China manufacturing cost 2026 →

Mass Production FAQs

What is the minimum order quantity for mass production at VNcontX?
There is no formal minimum order quantity. CNC machining runs start from 10 pieces; injection molding production runs start from 50 pieces after T1 approval; sheet metal fabrication from 20 pieces. The practical cost floor is the tooling and setup cost — for very small runs (under 50 pieces for CNC), prototyping pricing applies. For injection molding, the mold investment is amortized across the production run, so 500+ pieces typically delivers the best per-unit cost.
How do I transfer an existing program from China to VNcontX?
Send your existing 2D drawings (PDF or DXF) and 3D files (STEP or IGES) along with any inspection reports or quality records from your current supplier. Our engineering team reviews for DFM and issues a quote within 24–48 hours. If you have existing molds in China, we can assess whether transfer or re-cut is more cost-effective — for most programs under 200,000 shots, re-cutting in Vietnam is cheaper than tool transfer when tariff savings are factored in. Contact duc.nguyen@vncontx.com with your drawings to start.
What documentation comes with a mass production shipment?
Every production shipment includes: CMM dimensional report (100% FAI on first batch, sampling plan on subsequent batches per AQL 1.0), material certificates with heat number traceability, surface finish test reports where applicable, commercial invoice with HS code, Certificate of Origin Vietnam (for Section 301 exemption and EVFTA preferential tariff claims), packing list, and DHL/FedEx/sea freight tracking. PPAP documentation available on request for automotive and regulated programs.
How does VNcontX handle quality escapes or dimensional non-conformances?
Non-conformance is handled under our Zero-Defect Protocol: immediate containment, root cause analysis (8D format available), corrective action with evidence, and re-inspection before re-shipment. Replacement parts are expedited at no cost for conformance failures that originated in our process. We do not debate liability — if our CMM report shows parts were in-spec at shipment and they’re out of spec at your facility, we investigate the measurement system first. Our 98.4% OTD and Cpk ≥1.67 process data are available for review before any order.
Can VNcontX handle multi-process BOMs — parts needing CNC plus injection molding plus assembly?
Yes. Multi-process BOMs are handled under a single purchase order with a single point of contact. CNC-machined components, injection molded parts, and sheet metal fabrications are coordinated internally and shipped as a consolidated kit or sub-assembly. This eliminates the lead time risk of managing multiple suppliers with interdependent schedules.
