Prototype Mold Vietnam
Rapid Tooling & Low-Volume Production

Prototype injection molding at VNcontX closes the gap most product teams lose — 6–10 weeks between design freeze and first production-grade shot. The gap sits in tooling: waiting for a hard tool quote, committing $30K+ before design is validated, then re-cutting after T1 exposes a wall-thickness or gate problem.

VNcontX builds prototype injection molds in P20 and semi-hardened H13 steel — not aluminum bridge tooling that degrades after 5,000 shots. T1 samples ship from Bình Chánh District, Ho Chi Minh City in 15–20 days. The same mold scales to 300,000+ production shots without a tool swap.

When Prototype Tooling Is the Right Call

Buyers ask this question at the wrong decision point. By the time you’re quoting production tooling, you’ve already committed to a gate location, draft angles, and wall sections that may not survive a T1 run. Prototype tooling surfaces those problems before $40,000 of H13 is cut.

Use prototype tooling when:

  • Design has not completed a DFM review — draft angles, rib depth, or gate position uncertain
  • You need 50–5,000 units before committing to a full production run
  • Material selection is between two or three resins and you need real-world test parts
  • Regulatory submission (FDA, CE, REACH) requires physical samples, not printed proxies
  • Your production launch window is 8–12 weeks and aluminum tooling from a local shop adds 4–6 weeks of re-cut risk

Skip prototype tooling when:

  • Design has been injection-molded before — same geometry, new material only
  • Annual volume exceeds 500,000 shots — go straight to full H13 production tooling
  • Part geometry is simple (no undercuts, no thin walls) and DFM risk is low

Prototype Mold Specifications

VNcontX does not build aluminum bridge tools. Aluminum cavities deform under injection pressure beyond 5,000–8,000 shots, generating dimensional drift that invalidates your validation data. Every prototype mold is cut in P20 or semi-hardened H13 steel — the same material families used in our full production injection molding programs.

From Prototype to Production — No Mold Swap

The standard industry model charges you for a bridge tool, validates your design, then charges again for a production tool. VNcontX prototype molds are built to production steel standards from day one — the same mold runs your validation samples and your first production batch.

DFM Review Day 0–2

We review your 3D file for draft angle, wall thickness, gate location, and ejector position. Issues flagged in writing before any steel is ordered. DFM is included — not billed separately. For reference on what our engineers check, see the full DFM tolerance review — draft angle tables, wall thickness rules, and defect cause reference by resin.

Mold Cutting + EDM Day 2–14

CNC machining of P20 cavity and core, followed by wire EDM for sharp internal corners and fine features. Surface finish matched to your cosmetic requirement — from SPI B-2 to A-1 mirror.

T1 Sample Run Day 15–20

First article samples ship with a full CMM dimensional report (Zeiss Contura) against your drawing. Resin lot certification included. No part ships without your written sign-off.

Design Revision (if required) +5–8 days

If T1 reveals a dimensional issue or process parameter gap, we re-cut at no additional charge. One revision cycle is included in the tooling contract.

Low-Volume Production (50–5,000 pcs) On demand

Same mold. No retooling charge. Production runs of 50 to 5,000 pieces with in-process inspection and Cpk tracking. Mold stored at our Bình Chánh facility at no charge for active programs.

Full Production Scale-Up When ready

Volume above 5,000 shots/month? We add cavities or cut a hardened H13 production tool using the validated gate and cooling design from prototype. Your DFM data carries forward — no restart. See our production injection molding program or our compression molding service for thermoset programs, or urethane casting for bridge production without hard tooling for full-scale specs.

How VNcontX Handles the Hardest Parts of Prototype Tooling

Four problems buyers raise before committing a prototype mold to an overseas factory — and how we address each one.

Problem 01

Communication delay kills schedule

Offshore tooling fails on schedule because DFM feedback loops run across 12-hour time zones with no engineering continuity. VNcontX assigns a single English-speaking engineer to each order from quote through T1 sign-off. Same person. Direct line. Response within 4 hours during HCMC business hours — which overlaps with US morning and Australian afternoon in the same calendar day.

Problem 02

Mold ownership and IP protection

The mold is your property from the moment the tooling invoice is paid. VNcontX issues a formal mold ownership certificate with every completed tool. Transfer of tool is available at any time — no hold-back, no lock-in. Your CAD files are handled under NDA and not used for any other program.

Problem 03

What happens if T1 is out of tolerance?

One full revision cycle is written into every prototype mold contract at no additional charge. If CMM data shows a dimensional deviation against your drawing, we re-cut and re-sample. The only condition: the deviation must originate from our machining or process, not a drawing change on your side after PO.

Problem 04

Tariff exposure if trade policy changes

Vietnam sits outside the Section 301 schedule. Injection molds and molded plastic parts from Vietnam enter the US at 0% duty under current trade classification. The EVFTA provides the same exemption for EU-destined goods. We will not advise on future trade policy — but current duty exposure on a Vietnam-origin tool is zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file format do I need to submit to start a prototype mold quote?
STEP (.stp) is preferred — it carries full geometry and tolerances. IGES is acceptable. If you have a 2D drawing (PDF or DXF), include it alongside the 3D file so our engineer can read GD&T callouts and critical dimensions. For a full list of what to include, see our injection mold RFQ guide — 15 required fields, resin spec format, and template. If you don’t have a CAD file yet, use our Technical Briefing form and we’ll work from your sketch or reference sample.

Can I get functional prototype parts before committing to tooling?
Yes. If your geometry is machinable, VNcontX can produce CNC-machined plastic parts in ABS, POM, PEEK, or PC before tooling is cut. Machined parts carry tighter dimensional tolerances than molded parts and won’t replicate flow lines or weld line behavior — but they’re adequate for fit/function testing in most mechanical applications. Cost is higher per unit; tooling is the right path once design is frozen.

What is the minimum order quantity for a prototype mold run?
The minimum T1 sample run is 20 pieces — enough for dimensional inspection, functional testing, and regulatory submission samples with units left over. After T1 sign-off, production runs start at 50 pieces. There is no minimum above that; we run 50-piece batches for medical device validation programs and 5,000-piece batches for consumer product launches from the same mold.

How does shipping from Ho Chi Minh City work for T1 samples?
T1 samples ship via DHL or FedEx air freight from Tan Son Nhat Airport — 25km from our Bình Chánh facility. Transit time to US addresses: 3–5 business days. Transit to Australia: 4–6 business days. Transit to Germany, Netherlands, UK: 4–7 business days. We prepare commercial invoice, packing list, and HS code classification for customs clearance. Express clearance available for time-critical validation programs.

Prototype Tooling Cost vs Full Production Tooling — What to Expect

Tooling budget is the first question buyers ask. The honest answer is: it depends on part complexity, cavity count, and steel grade. These are real ranges from VNcontX programs — not catalog numbers.

Part Complexity Prototype Mold (P20, 1-cavity) Production Mold (H13, 1-cavity) Break-Even Volume
Simple — no undercuts, uniform wall $2,500 – $5,000 $6,000 – $10,000 ~800–1,500 pcs
Medium — 1–2 side actions, ribs $5,000 – $10,000 $12,000 – $20,000 ~2,000–4,000 pcs
Complex — lifters, thin walls, tight tolerances $10,000 – $18,000 $22,000 – $40,000+ ~5,000+ pcs

How to read the break-even column

Break-even is the production volume at which the cost delta between prototype and production tooling is recovered through per-part price difference. Below that volume, prototype tooling delivers lower total cost. Above it, the higher tool cost of H13 is offset by longer shot life and lower scrap rate. If your annual forecast sits below 50,000 shots, starting with a P20 prototype mold and upgrading later is almost always the lower-risk path.

All tooling quotes from VNcontX include a DFM review at no charge. If your part needs a $30,000 H13 tool and a $5,000 prototype mold won’t cover your validation requirement, we’ll tell you before you commit — not after T1.
